NC-specific reasons for a generator

Hurricane season (June–November): The Triangle is far enough inland to avoid the worst storm surge, but extended power outages from hurricanes and tropical storms are common. Hurricane Florence (2018) left parts of the Triangle without power for 3–5 days.

Ice storms: Piedmont NC gets ice storms that bring down power lines and tree limbs. These are harder to predict than hurricanes and can knock out power for days.

Summer thunderstorms: Severe afternoon storms cause localized outages throughout the summer months.

A standby generator eliminates all of these — your power stays on within 10 seconds of an outage, automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Installed cost in the Triangle: $5,000–$8,000 for a 14–16kW unit (covers essentials + most circuits), $8,000–$15,000+ for a 20–24kW unit (covers entire home). Price includes the generator, concrete pad, automatic transfer switch, fuel connection, permit, and inspection.
If your home has a natural gas line (common in newer Triangle subdivisions), natural gas is the better choice — unlimited fuel supply, no tank to maintain. If you're on propane or have no gas service, we install propane generators with an appropriately sized tank.
On natural gas, indefinitely — as long as the gas utility is functioning. On propane, runtime depends on tank size and load, but a 500-gallon tank typically provides 5–7 days of runtime for a 20kW generator at moderate load.
