Hillsborough — 35 minutes from HQ
Hillsborough is one of North Carolina’s most historic towns, with a downtown district dating to the colonial era and a growing number of newer communities on its edges. This gives us two distinct project profiles: careful renovation of historic homes and standard updates to newer construction.
What we do in Hillsborough
- Historic home renovation — Sensitive updates that preserve character while modernizing safety and comfort. Electrical upgrades from knob-and-tube or early Romex to modern wiring, plumbing replacement from galvanized or lead to PEX, kitchen and bathroom modernization that respects original proportions.
- Remodeling — Kitchen and bathroom renovations in both historic and modern homes. Newer communities like Waterstone and Collins Ridge need the same builder-grade updates as other Triangle towns.
- Electrical — Panel upgrades (critical for historic homes with 60-amp service), dedicated circuits, lighting that complements period architecture
- Plumbing — Repiping for pre-1960 homes, water heater replacement, fixture upgrades, well pump coordination for rural properties
Working with historic homes
Hillsborough’s Historic District Commission reviews exterior modifications to contributing structures. We’re familiar with their process and can advise on what triggers review and what doesn’t. Interior renovations — where most of our work occurs — generally don’t require HDC approval but must still meet modern building code.
The challenge with historic homes is balancing preservation and performance. Running new wiring through plaster walls, fitting modern plumbing into tight framing, and upgrading insulation without damaging original materials all require experienced hands. We’ve worked on enough pre-1950 homes to know where the surprises hide.
